Class 3 PCB manufacturing and beyond
Capital investment keeps Calumet Electronics in the top tier of PCB manufacturers.

CALUMET, MI – (September 26, 2016) Calumet Electronics’ ongoing commitment to capital investment has allowed the company to not only exceed the ever-evolving industry demands, but also remain a quality leader in the industry. Calumet’s pledge to reinvest 10 percent of their annual revenue has allowed the company to purchase the world’s most reliable and accurate manufacturing equipment. This investment philosophy has allowed Calumet to maintain an edge over 90 percent of its competitors.
As the semiconductor industry continues to drive PCB design architecture and board level complexity, emerging process technology and world-class manufacturing systems are increasingly necessary. Along with that comes a demand for smaller board sizes, product lifetime performance, and minimized time to market.
Calumet is able to meet these demands and operate within IPC 6012 Class 3 standards. “One of the key benefits of Calumet’s ongoing commitment to capital investment is our ability to exceed Class 3 specifications on every PCB,” says Mike Kadlec, Vice President/Corporate Development. “Whereas many PCB manufacturers adhere to Class 2 or Class 3 depending on variable customer specification, Calumet fabricates entirely to IPC Class 3, driving quality up and reducing the cost of production.”
Calumet maintains this level of quality by housing some of the PCB industry’s most sophisticated process technology within its 110,000-square-foot purpose-built facility. These technologies include two Inspecta X-Ray Drill Systems and four Orbotech LDIs (Laser Direct Imaging). The “smart” drill systems with real-time x-ray enable review of internal registration targets on every inner layer panel prior to drill. The system calculates microscopic shifts between layers and recalibrates in real time to optimize hole-to-inner-layer copper to maintain tolerances. This ensures optimum compliance to customer specifications. The Orbotech LDIs are utilized to digitize inner and outer layer images which ensures optimum image resolution with enhanced throughput and absolute quality.
By far the most sophisticated investment, Calumet has installed numerous Class 10,000 cleanroom environments which are utilized throughout the manufacturing operation to ensure absolute contamination-free processing. Calumet’s cleanrooms utilize contained rooms and positive HEPA filtration airflow. For inner and outer layer imaging, this equates to exceptional image quality and fine line resolution—preventing shorts, opens, scrap, and fallout during AOI (automatic optical inspection) or electrical test.
According to Mike, “Cleanroom process environments at Calumet represent state-of-the-art process technology, to support PCB design complexity with enhanced yields and lower costs. While cleanrooms do require massive capital investment, they ultimately return many times over in contribution to overall cost of quality. Most domestic fabricators today would not have the internal cleanroom technology we have invested in here at Calumet.”

Nearly 50 years in business
Calumet Electronics’ home in the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan was once world famous for its copper mining. The late 1800s saw the area booming with more than 100,000 people working in the local copper mining industry. By the mid 1900s the need for copper was declining and the mines were closing their doors. A local engineer was experimenting with fabricating circuit boards in his garage and could see the massive potential in this budding industry.
The historic Calumet Roundhouse, once used to service and store train, was converted into the Calumet Electronics manufacturing plant.
In 1968 more than 60 business owners, professionals and merchants backed the idea and incorporated Calumet Electronics. Their simple mission was "to provide long-term employment to people living in Calumet and the surrounding communities." This is still a crucial part of our goals today. We are committed to our community and are inspired to work harder and work smarter so we can continue to grow Calumet ELectronics' capabilities and product quality.
